Connection Between ISO 50001 Standard and SDG Goals: Affordable and Secure Energy

In today’s world, where the rising issues of the environment have become crucial to look at, sustainability is very important as environmental well-being. ISO 50001 certification was published in 2011 to establish a global framework for energy management. It is used to make efficient use of energy and minimize energy costs and consumption to limit its effect on the environment.

Which Organizations Should Adhere to the ISO 50001 Standard in Dubai?

ISO 50001 energy management system (EnMS) certification applies to all types of organizations. This is a flexible ISO standard that can be utilized to fulfil specific requirements of the organizations. Any organization, regardless of its size and sector that has energy consumption issues and is interested in improving energy performance and minimizing energy costs to be a part of environmental sustainability leading to reduced carbon footprint, will greatly benefit from this certification.

Sectors such as commercial businesses, government parties, public sectors, healthcare sectors, educational organizations, industrial companies, manufacturing sectors, and many others have the potential to implement the ISO 50001 standard in Dubai to strengthen their energy performance and succeed in business.

Understanding the Concept of SDG Goals

The full form of SDG is ‘Sustainable Development Goals’, which is a collection of 17 international goals. the United Nations General Assembly established the concept of SDG  to create a framework for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all. The 17 SDGs are:

  1. No Poverty
  2. Zero hunger
  3. Good health and well-being
  4. Quality education
  5. Gender equality
  6. Clean water and sanitation
  7. Affordable and clean energy
  8. Decent work and economic growth
  9. Industry, innovation, and infrastructure
  10. Reduced inequalities
  11. Sustainable cities and communities
  12. Responsible consumption and production
  13. Climate Action
  14. Life below water
  15. Life on land
  16. Peace, justice, and strong institutions
  17. Partnerships for the goals

These SDGs address the most discussed global challenges such as inequality, unsustainability, hunger, poverty, health, lack of education, water pollution, etc to develop a better place for the people and after generations.

SDG Goal 7: Affordable and Secure Energy

SDG Goal 7 is about ensuring energy efficiency and making it clean and affordable which is the main trait of the development of agricultural, commercial, industrial, educational and many more sectors. It addresses the “affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all” by 2030 as instructed by the UN. Its core aims are:

1.Making sure the sustainable, affordable and modern energy service is accessible universally.

2.Increase the global improvement rate of energy efficiency.

3.Enhance the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

There are some other clauses of SDG 7 but these three are the core clauses that are relevant to our topic of ISO energy management and how SDG 7 is related to it.

ISO 50001 and SDG

ISO 50001 has a direct connection to the ISO 50001 standard as the SDG 7 goal refers to affordable and clean energy. ISO EnMS deals with energy management systems and works to enhance the energy performance of the organization. The Sustainable Development Goal 7 by the United Nations also aims to ensure reliable and sustainable energy by improving energy-related performance for different sectors internationally.

Conclusion

ISO 50001 is globally known as a standard that ensures effective energy management in the organization that has the ISO Enms implementation. The Sustainable Development Goals by United Nations includes the SDG 7 of affordable and clean energy which aims parallel to the ISO 50001 standard. In this blog, there’s a detailed discussion about how ISO 50001 system development contributes to the global SDG goal 7 and how important it is for organizations to go ahead in the business. ISO EnMS should be implemented by every organization to enhance energy performance and simultaneously contribute to global sustainability initiatives for a healthy environment around us for now and in the future.
